Why split bases beat one Key for a week
A 5–7 night Florida Keys trip has three bad default lodging plans. One hotel for the whole week locks you to a single vibe: an Upper Keys reef week never really becomes a Key West walking trip, and a Key West week makes every northbound reef or fishing day a long U.S. 1 commute. Island-hopping every night is the opposite failure—packing, late check-ins and checkout mornings eat the boat and beach hours you came for. Split bases sit in the middle: sleep near the activity for a couple of nights, then move once or twice as mile markers drop toward MM 0.
Upper, Middle and Lower Keys plus Key West do not feel like the same destination. Key Largo and Islamorada are highway towns built around boats, parks and early check-ins. Marathon is the Mid-Keys service hub. Big Pine and Bahia Honda are quieter, wildlife- and park-oriented. Key West is a walkable city with nightlife and the only practical Dry Tortugas departure. Treating that range as one resort strip is how first-timers burn a day in the car and still miss the stretch they cared about.
Drive fatigue is not a side note. Much of the Overseas Highway is a two-lane lifeline with bridges, limited passing and no useful detour. A “quick run” from Key Largo to Old Town is a half-day of windshield time before parking, and the return is the same road. Sample 5–7 night patterns MM 100 → 0
Classic week (three bases, about 6–7 nights): 2–3 nights in the Upper Keys (Key Largo or Islamorada, roughly MM 107–72) for reef, diving or fishing; 1–2 nights in Marathon (roughly MM 60–47) as a Mid-Keys hub near the Seven Mile Bridge; 2–3 nights in Key West (MM 4–0). Use the Marathon stay as the hinge, not a third sightseeing circuit. Open /keys/key-largo, /keys/islamorada, /keys/marathon and /keys/key-west before you book so groceries, parking and boat departures sit near the pillow.
Tight five nights (two bases): 2 nights Upper Keys, then 3 nights Key West. Drive Middle and Lower Keys as one transit day with a planned stop—Marathon lunch and services, or Bahia Honda day-use if you reserved parking and checked park conditions. This is the first-timer pattern when you want both reef time and a real Key West evening without a third hotel. Mid-Keys hub plus Key West (return visitors, 5–7 nights): 2–3 nights in Marathon, then 2–3 nights in Key West. Skip a dedicated Upper Keys hotel if the reef is not the point of this trip. Marathon still lets you day-reach Islamorada or Bahia Honda without moving bags, and it is the easiest place on the chain to restock, see a clinic, or turn a trailer around. Quiet Lower Keys evenings belong on Big Pine (/keys/big-pine-key) or a reserved Bahia Honda campsite (/keys/bahia-honda), not as an afterthought motel between Marathon and Duval.
Upper-only reef focus (5–7 nights, one region): stay in Key Largo or Islamorada the whole time. Early boat check-ins punish a Key West hotel. You can still take a southbound day if weather and energy allow, but a same-day Key West sprint from an Upper Keys pillow has the same honesty problem as a Miami day trip—leave it off the must-do list. Camping-plus-city (5–7 nights): 2–3 nights at Bahia Honda or another reserved Lower Keys camp, provision on Big Pine, then 2–3 nights in Key West. What each major base is actually good for
Key Largo (/keys/key-largo) is the mainland gateway and the default first pillow after South Florida. It is built around reef trips, dive shops and John Pennekamp rather than a walkable nightlife district. Full-size groceries, fuel and pharmacies exist on-island, so a two- or three-night Upper base does not require a supply run to Marathon. Lodging is spread along U.S. 1—match the mile marker to the marina or park check-in. Parking is usually on-property, which is a different world from Old Town circling. Islamorada (/keys/islamorada) is the Upper Keys village for sportfishing, waterfront meals and a slightly denser dining strip. The name covers several islands, so oceanside vs bayside and the mile marker matter more than the village label. Parking at popular waterfront stops can be tight; hotel lots still beat Key West historic-core hunting. Groceries are available but less of a full-service town than Marathon. Choose it over Key Largo when charters and dinner are the point of the Upper stay, not when you only need the first island after the mainland. Marathon (/keys/marathon) is the Mid-Keys service hub: groceries, hospital and urgent care, an airport, marinas, boat ramps and everyday errands near the Seven Mile Bridge. It is the best single pin if you want one Mid-Keys base and day-reach both directions without moving luggage. Parking and turning a larger vehicle are generally easier than in Old Town. Nightlife is local, not Duval. A 1–2 night Marathon stay on a week-long split is there so the Upper Keys and Key West blocks can stay short and useful. Big Pine Key (/keys/big-pine-key) is a Lower Keys quiet base: Key deer country, Looe Key access, and the everyday groceries, fuel and pharmacy that neighboring islands lack. Drive slowly, especially at dawn and dusk, and do not treat roadside deer as an attraction. This is not a nightlife pillow. Use 1–2 nights here when wildlife, backcountry water or a Bahia Honda beach day is the reason you came, and provision before you roll into a park or a smaller Lower Keys rental. Bahia Honda itself (/keys/bahia-honda) is a state-park destination, not a town—camping or day-use only after you have a reservation or a parking plan, with Big Pine as the backup for ice, fuel and food.
Key West (/keys/key-west) is the walking, museum, sunset and nightlife end of the highway. Give it 2–3 nights or you will only see a corridor of Duval. Park once (or skip the car in the historic core) and treat Old Town parking scarcity as a planning constraint, not a surprise. Dry Tortugas ferry and seaplane check-in from Key West, so the night before that trip has to be here or next door—not in Marathon and not on a Miami clock. Stock Island (/keys/stock-island) is the working-waterfront spillover immediately east: marinas, some lodging when Old Town is sold out, quieter evenings, and a required hop into the city for the walkable core. It is a useful Key West-region base, not a substitute for Old Town itself.
- Upper Keys: boat mornings and on-island groceries.
- Marathon: hub services and easier parking than Old Town.
- Big Pine / Bahia Honda: quiet, wildlife, park rules—not nightlife.
- Key West: walk, park once, and sleep there the night before Tortugas.
Hotel, vacation rental, or camping as a base
Hotels, motels, resorts and guest houses are the simplest split-base tool because two-night stays do not come with a checkout-clean or a lockbox window in the middle of a transit day. Compare by island first on /categories/hotels-lodging, then confirm parking, pet, trailer, dock and fee rules with the property—not from a listing headline. A Keys mailing address can sit miles from the marina you think you booked. Resorts can work as a contained first or last base; they still do not erase U.S. 1 if the rest of the week belongs to another Key.
Vacation rentals earn their keep on three-night blocks, kitchens and groups. A kitchen only helps if that island has a real grocery run—Marathon, Key Largo and Key West do; Bahia Honda does not. Check-in windows can collide with a late Overseas Highway arrival, so a rental is a weaker one-night hinge than a hotel. Extra cars, boat trailers and golf carts need explicit property confirmation; do not treat a driveway photo as trailer parking. Camping and RV stays are a base type, not a fallback hotel. Public campgrounds and private RV parks are scarce in peak season, and rig length, overhead clearance and loop rules vary by site. Bahia Honda’s loops are not interchangeable; Dry Tortugas camping is expedition-style and still needs a Key West-side connection. When to book, and hurricane-season awareness
Winter through early spring is the high-demand window for Keys lodging, along with holiday weekends and Key West event weeks. Book the scarce piece first—peak-season rooms, state-park campsites, and Dry Tortugas transport—then fill restaurants and roadside stops. Summer often has more availability and more heat, afternoon storms and water-day cancellations. None of that is a price list: rates, resort fees, deposits and parking charges belong on the operator or property page you will actually pay.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November. That is not a reason to skip the Keys, and it is not a promise of empty hotels. Prefer booking terms you can actually change, read the cancellation policy on the property or campground site, and keep a weather-flexible day in a 5–7 night split so one closed park does not collapse the week. - Peak winter/spring and event weeks: book the pillow before the fun.
- Campsites and Tortugas seats often disappear before ordinary rooms.
