The Florida Keys are not a mainland sand strip with interchangeable public beaches every few miles. Coral rock, mangrove shoreline, bridges and private property are the default. A place mapped as a “beach” can be a state-park swim, a county park with a protected swimming area, a city lot with restrooms, a boardwalk over shallows, or a roadside turnout that is not a place to put kids in the water. We do not rank beaches. This page is a comparison by Key so you can match the stretch to the job.
Decide the job before you pick an island. A swimming morning wants legal access, a lot you can actually park in, and water that is meant for people—not a scenic shoulder on U.S. 1. A photo stop can be a historic-bridge view, a boardwalk, or a city waterfront park; it does not need a swim. Kids and mixed groups usually need restrooms, a defined swim area and a backup if the first lot is gone. Parking friction is the constraint more often than sand quality. Upper Keys: Pennekamp shoreline, Harry Harris, Islamorada
Key Largo is the reef gateway, not a Miami-style beach town. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the honest park day: gate, parking and whatever shoreline the park is offering that morning. Cannon Beach and Far Beach are shorelines inside that same park, so they follow park rules and are not a free U.S. 1 pull-off. The living coral people picture is typically a boat ride in sanctuary water; shore time is a park product. Tavernier is the practical Upper Keys stop for a county park. Harry Harris County Beach and Park is the mapped oceanside park with a protected swimming area noted on the county ramp listing, plus picnic facilities. The same property holds Harry Harris Park Boat Ramp. Islamorada is the village for sportfishing and waterfront meals, and it runs three shoreline parks with different access rules. Founders Park on Plantation Key lets Village residents and their guests in free; everyone else pays a per-person day fee set by the Village, and dogs are not allowed on the beach or in the picnic areas (the park has a separate fenced dog park). Library Beach Park at MM 81.5 bayside is a small beach on a mangrove-lined creek with a playground and a pavilion; the Village says swim at your own risk and no dogs. Anne's Beach at MM 73.5 oceanside, the south end of the village, is the boardwalk-and-shallows stop: calm, shallow water, leashed dogs allowed and a paved lot that fills. Layton and Long Key (Layton & Long Key) are a quieter shoreline stretch, not a service town. Long Key State Park is the MM 67.5 shoreline park for birding, paddling, picnicking and snorkeling access under Florida State Parks rules. Florida State Parks currently posts that the Golden Orb hiking trail and all primitive camping are closed for construction (effective July 12, 2026), and that the park may close for portions of the day during King Tide flooding (effective Sept. 26, 2026). Curry Hammock State Park sits on the east/Crawl Key end of the Marathon hub (Marathon). It is a state-park day with trails and shoreline, not a U.S. 1 shoulder. Camping (Curry Hammock State Park Campground) is reserved. Sombrero Beach is the mapped Marathon city beach, oceanside, off the highway via Sombrero Boulevard—not a travel-lane photo stop. City hours, parking, holidays and any resident rules belong on the official source linked from that listing. Picnic shelters in a photo are not a reservation. Coco Plum Beach is the curated City of Marathon natural Atlantic beach—not a second Sombrero and not the old Coca/Cocoa entries on the map. Sunset Bay Park on Grassy Key is a City gulfside nature and sunset stop near MM 58, not a Sombrero-style swim day. Key Colony Beach shoreline may still be public or guest-only. Sunset Park, the City park at West Ocean Drive and 12th Street, is not a swim beach: City of Key Colony Beach Ordinance 2025-503, adopted September 18, 2025, prohibits swimming and snorkeling in the park because crocodiles live in the coastal water and swift currents surround it. Lower Keys: Bahia Honda swimming sand vs waysides
Bahia Honda is the Lower Keys park people mean when they want a sandy swim with water that looks like the postcard. It is a state-park destination, not a town. Bahia Honda State Park holds the named beaches: Sandspur Beach, Calusa Beach and Loggerhead Beach. Those names are still park shoreline—limited shade, posted swim sense, no pets on the sand per park guidance. Day-use can close at capacity. Big Pine is the everyday Lower Keys stop, not a second Bahia Honda. Long Beach is mapped natural shoreline, not a city swim park with a guaranteed sandy lot. Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach at MM 40, the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge, is a Monroe County beach park, not a substitute for the state-park beaches. Farther west, Sugarloaf Beach and Boca Chica Beach are mapped shoreline, not an invitation to treat every beach on the map as public swimming. Key West has more named city beaches than the rest of the chain, and they are still not Miami Beach. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is the usual swimming-and-snorkel park at the west end: fort, rocky-and-sandy shoreline, trees, and a gate. It is a park day, not a Duval stroll that happens to get wet. Arrive with a parking plan; Old Town circling is a different problem from the park lot.
Smathers Beach is the long South Roosevelt city beach—the open, roadside-looking swim most visitors picture in Key West. Higgs Beach is the Atlantic-side city beach with park facilities nearby. CB Harvey Rest Beach Park is the Rest Beach / White Street area stop; Simonton Street Beach and Truman Beach are smaller waterfront edges. Stock Island is the working-waterfront spillover, not a substitute beach town. Parking, day-use vs state park, and pull-offs that are not beaches

County, city and village parks (Harry Harris, Sombrero, Key West city beaches, Founders Park) use a different operator. Parking fills on weekends, holidays and any comfortable winter day. Arrive early enough to lose the first lot and still use a legal backup in the same region. Neighborhood shoulders, bridge approaches and travel lanes are not overflow. Photographing from a moving lane on Seven Mile or a wayside without a legal stall is how people get hurt. If the job is a walk over the water rather than a swim, two Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail bridges have real trail access. Roadside limestone, “secret beach” map names and HOA shoreline are the honest no. Bay Harbor Association Private Beach in Tavernier is labeled private in the directory. Generic North Beach and South Beach nodes on Key Largo are mapped names, not a second Pennekamp. Summer beach days often lose the afternoon to heat, storms and lightning. Winter can mean wind, chop and a different water color than the postcard. When the first shoreline fails—full lot, wind, lightning, weeds—the backup is another stop in the same region, a museum or indoor hour, groceries, or a nap at the hotel. It is not a sudden drive to Key West from Key Largo, and it is not standing on a bridge catwalk.
