November is a transition month, and storm season still runs to Nov. 30

The National Weather Service office in Key West describes May and November as typically transition months between the Keys’ wet season (June through October) and the dry season (December through April). In practice that means a November trip can open with late-wet-season showers and close with the first drier, breezier stretches of the winter pattern. Plan for both instead of packing for one. Source: https://www.weather.gov/key/climate

Atlantic hurricane season is not over when November starts. The National Hurricane Center states that the season runs from June 1 to November 30, and that tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs before and after those dates. NHC puts the seasonal peak on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, so November sits on the back side of the season. That is still a real window, not a guarantee of quiet weather. Source: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/

Treat that as a booking rule rather than a worry. Pick lodging and tours whose change and cancellation terms you have actually read, keep the first and last nights flexible when you can, and re-check NHC outlooks in the week before you drive south. No one can honestly promise storm odds for a given week, so this guide does not offer any.

If you planned an October trip and slid it later, the logistics carry over. Florida Keys in October (Florida Keys in October: shoulder season, storm awareness and trip logistics) covers the hurricane-season planning habits, and When to visit the Florida Keys (When to visit the Florida Keys: weather, crowds and honest tradeoffs) lays out the month-by-month tradeoffs around November.

Quick checklist
  • Hurricane season ends Nov. 30 (NHC). Check outlooks the week you travel.
  • NWS Key West calls November a transition month between the wet and dry seasons.
  • Read change and cancellation terms before you pay, not after a forecast changes.

Cold fronts, wind and what they do to snorkel and boat days

November is when the first cold fronts of the season start reaching the island chain. NWS Key West notes that winter cold fronts tend to be modified by the warm water as they move in from the north, so a front in the Keys usually means a breezier, drier, slightly cooler day or two rather than real cold. Pack a light layer for evenings and boat rides. Yankee Freedom’s own what-to-bring list for the Dry Tortugas ferry includes a light jacket or sweatshirt. Sources: https://www.weather.gov/key/climate and https://www.drytortugas.com/

The bigger effect is on the water. Behind a front the wind often freshens for a day or more, and that is what decides whether reef snorkel trips, dive boats, fishing charters and long paddles run. Choppier water can also cloud shore snorkel spots. Before any water morning, read the marine forecast from NWS Key West, the local forecast office for the Keys, including the Hawk Channel, Florida Straits and Florida Bay zones and any small craft advisory. Source: https://www.weather.gov/key/

Build the week so wind cannot wreck it. Put the reef boat or Dry Tortugas day early, so a weather cancellation leaves room to rebook. Give every water day a land backup on the same stretch of Overseas Highway. And let the operator make the go or no-go call. A shop that cancels on a windy morning is doing its job.

For water-day details by area, see Key Largo snorkeling day (Key Largo snorkeling day: Pennekamp, reef boats and honest logistics), Florida Keys shore snorkeling (Florida Keys snorkeling from shore: honest spots by Key, conditions and safety) and Florida Keys kayaking and paddling (Florida Keys Kayaking & Paddling Spots by Mile Marker). Each one already plans around wind and conditions.

Quick checklist
  • Read the NWS Key West marine forecast the evening before and again the morning of.
  • Book reef or ferry days early in the trip so a cancellation can be rebooked.
  • Keep a museum, nature center or bridge walk on the same stretch as a backup.

Crowds and pricing: early November versus Thanksgiving week

November does not behave like one month. The first half usually still feels like fall shoulder season: school is in session and the winter crowd has not fully arrived, so you may find more choice in lodging and tour times than you will in midwinter. That is a tendency, not a promise. Special events change it fast, especially in Key West.

Thanksgiving week is different. Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026 is Thanksgiving, and the surrounding days bring holiday drive-down traffic, more demand for rooms, rentals and campsites, and busier parks, boat ramps and restaurants. Expect lodging rates and minimum-stay rules to tighten around the holiday. Prices are not quoted here, so compare the full total each property shows for your exact nights, taxes and fees included.

Holiday demand shows up at the state parks too. Florida State Parks says Bahia Honda State Park may close when its day-use areas reach capacity and recommends arriving early on weekends and holidays. Plan Thanksgiving-week beach days for early in the day, or use a weekday. Source: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bahia-honda-state-park

If your dates are flexible, an early-November week or the days just after the holiday weekend tend to be easier to book than the holiday itself. If they are not, book Thanksgiving-week lodging and anything with limited seats as soon as your dates are firm, and keep dinner plans flexible.

Quick checklist
  • Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, Nov. 26. Book the holiday week as early as you can.
  • Compare the full lodging total for your exact nights. Rates and minimum stays move.
  • Arrive early for state-park beaches on holiday days. Some parks close when full.

Key West World Championship powerboat races, Nov. 1–8, 2026

One November event is worth planning around in Key West. Race World Offshore, the organizer, lists the Key West World Championship for November 1–8, 2026 at Truman Waterfront Park. Its event page lists Friday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 8 as race days, plus Wednesday, Nov. 4 as a bonus day. The organizer calls it the close of the Race World Offshore National Series season. Source: https://raceworldoffshore.com/key-west/

Race week changes how Old Town works. Expect busier waterfront areas, fuller lodging and more traffic around the harbor. The organizer’s FAQ says there is no parking within blocks of the Navy Mole entrance where official race viewing takes place, and suggests a rideshare, the free Duval Loop or a bicycle instead. Plan to arrive in Key West on foot, by bike or by transit on race days. Key West parking and cruise day (Key West parking and cruise day: pier, Old Town and honest timing) covers the wider parking picture.

If you want quieter streets rather than race action, consider basing in the Lower or Middle Keys that week and driving into Key West on a non-race day. Either way, confirm schedules, access and any ticketing on the organizer’s page, since event details can change. This guide names no other November event dates, because it only includes dates confirmed on the organizer’s own page.

Quick checklist
  • Race World Offshore lists Nov. 1–8, 2026 at Truman Waterfront Park.
  • Organizer FAQ: no parking near the Navy Mole entrance. Use a rideshare, the Duval Loop or a bike.
  • Book Key West rooms early for race week, or stay up the Keys and visit on a non-race day.

Book ahead: Florida State Parks camping

Keys state-park campsites are reservation products, and November weekends and Thanksgiving week can fill well in advance. Florida State Parks states that Florida residents may reserve campsites and cabins up to 11 months before arrival, and non-Florida residents up to 10 months. New sites are released for reservation every day, cancellations go back into inventory as they happen, and any site that is not reserved or occupied can go to walk-in visitors first come, first served. Source: https://www.floridastateparks.org/reservation-information

In practice: if your November dates are set, check the Florida State Parks reservation site as soon as your booking window opens. If you missed it, check back for cancellations, especially in the days just before your trip. Florida State Parks also notes length-of-stay limits during periods of high demand, so read them before you plan a long Thanksgiving stay at one park.

State-park camping options in the directory include Bahia Honda State Park Campgrounds in the Lower Keys and Curry Hammock State Park Campground in Marathon. Each listing carries the current loop, rig and facility notes we have confirmed. Check Long Key State Park on the Florida State Parks site before planning around it, because its listing carries current construction and King Tide closure notes.

For loop-by-loop detail and private-park options, see the Florida Keys camping and RV guide (Florida Keys campgrounds & RV parks: public vs private, booking windows and rig limits) and the Bahia Honda camping guide (Bahia Honda camping: Buttonwood, Sandspur & Bayside loops).

Quick checklist
  • Florida State Parks: Florida residents can book up to 11 months ahead, non-residents up to 10.
  • Unreserved sites go to walk-ins, and cancellations return to inventory. Keep checking.
  • Read the Florida State Parks length-of-stay rules before a long holiday stay.

Book ahead: the Dry Tortugas ferry, seaplane and Garden Key camping

Dry Tortugas National Park is about 70 miles west of Key West, with no roads. The National Park Service lists the official Yankee Freedom ferry, a seaplane concession, private boats and permitted charters as the ways in, and ferry and seaplane visitors arrive at Garden Key, home of Fort Jefferson. NPS says careful planning is essential and services are limited. Source: https://www.nps.gov/drto/planyourvisit/directions.htm

Seats are the constraint, not the weather alone. NPS says Yankee Freedom reservations are limited and sell out months in advance, that the ferry is limited to 10 camping passengers per day, and recommends booking months ahead, especially for the winter holidays and the busier winter season. The seaplane does not carry campers. If Garden Key camping is part of your November plan, the ferry seat is what you lock first. Source: https://www.nps.gov/drto/planyourvisit/camping.htm

Plan for weather on the day too. NPS tells campers to bring an extra day’s supply of food and water in case the ferry is cancelled, and to pack strong tent stakes for frequent high winds. Yankee Freedom says every adult needs photo ID at check-in. Book through the official operators, which have directory listings: Yankee Freedom Ferry to Dry Tortugas and Key West Seaplane Adventures to Dry Tortugas. Sources: https://www.nps.gov/drto/planyourvisit/camping.htm and https://www.drytortugas.com/

Read Dry Tortugas National Park & Fort Jefferson for what the park does and does not have, then use the Dry Tortugas day-trip planner (Dry Tortugas day trip from Key West: ferry vs seaplane planner) to build the day. Put it early in your Key West nights so a windy morning can still be rebooked.

Quick checklist
  • NPS: ferry seats are limited and sell out months ahead. Campers are capped at 10 per day.
  • The seaplane does not carry campers. Camping means the ferry or a private or permitted boat.
  • Bring photo ID, a light layer and, if camping, an extra day of food and water.
07

By-Key plan: Key Largo and Islamorada

Key Largo is the reef-trip base. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park runs its glass-bottom, snorkel and dive trips from the park docks. Its listing carries Florida State Parks construction notes, including one boat ramp being closed and reduced trailer parking, so read it before towing a boat. Rainbow Reef Dive Center is another reef-trip option. On a windy November morning, a mangrove paddle with Florida Bay Outfitters may be a calmer plan than open water, if the outfitter is running.

In Islamorada, keep the plan split between water and land. Robbie’s of Islamorada and Anne's Beach cover a short, easy waterfront stop. Founders Park works for a family afternoon, and its listing carries the Village’s current entry rules. On blown-out days, the History of Diving Museum and Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park are ready-made land backups. Check each listing for its open days.

One caution for Islamorada paddlers. Florida State Parks says Indian Key Historic State Park has been completely closed to the public since April 2026 while its dock is rebuilt, a project slated to take up to six months. Confirm on the official park page that it has reopened before you plan a paddle out. Source: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/indian-key-historic-state-park

Quick checklist
  • Read the Pennekamp listing’s construction notes before towing a boat.
  • Pair each Upper Keys water morning with a museum or state-park land backup.
  • Indian Key: confirm it has reopened before planning a paddle.
08

By-Key plan: Marathon and the Middle Keys

Marathon is the easiest November base when wind is the wildcard, because so many land options sit on the same short stretch. The Turtle Hospital runs guided tours, so book through its own site. Crane Point Museum & Nature Center has hammock trails and exhibits. And the Old Seven Mile Bridge (Knights Key Trailhead) is a walk or bike ride that does not depend on calm seas. Pigeon Key & Old Seven Mile Bridge Tours handles the island itself.

When the wind lies down, the Middle Keys’ paddling and beach options open up. Curry Hammock State Park, Sombrero Beach and guided mangrove trips such as Kayaking The Keys from Grassy Key Marina cover a calm day. Check Long Key State Park for current closure notes before heading there, because its listing records King Tide flooding closures this fall.

If you want the day sequenced for you, the Marathon base day plan (Marathon as a Mid-Keys base: day plan), Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key (Seven Mile Bridge and Pigeon Key: walking Old Seven, parking and driving the span) and the ready-made day kits at Day kits all start from this stretch.

Quick checklist
  • Marathon has many land backups close together, which helps in a windy week.
  • Book Turtle Hospital tours ahead through its own site.
  • Check Long Key closure notes before driving there.
09

By-Key plan: the Lower Keys and Key West

In the Lower Keys, Bahia Honda State Park is the anchor beach and sunset stop. On a Thanksgiving-week day, arrive early, since Florida State Parks says the park may close when its day-use areas reach capacity. Around Big Pine Key, the National Key Deer Refuge Nature Center is the starting point for responsible Key deer viewing. Drive slowly and never feed the deer. Big Pine Kayak Adventures runs naturalist-led backcountry trips when conditions allow. The Big Pine Key local guide (Big Pine Key guide: Key deer, Looe Key, groceries and where to base in the Lower Keys) fills in the rest.

In Key West, plan around the race week if your dates overlap it, and around the Dry Tortugas day if you are going. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park covers a beach, snorkel and history afternoon. Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory is a sheltered backup for a breezy or showery hour. The Key West first-timer attractions guide (Key West for first-timers: attractions, museums and tours) and Key West where to eat (Where to eat in Key West, by neighborhood) round out the town days.

Use Florida Keys beaches by Key (Florida Keys beaches by Key: swimming, parking and honest expectations) to match a beach to the stretch you are sleeping on, so a wind shift means a short drive, not a cross-Keys one.

Quick checklist
  • Bahia Honda can close when full on holidays. Arrive early.
  • Big Pine Key: slow down for Key deer and never feed them.
  • Key West: work around race week and the Dry Tortugas day.
10

Split-base November week and how to lock the plan

A November week usually works with two or three bases rather than daily one-way drives. For example, use Key Largo or Islamorada for reef and mangrove days, Marathon for the middle of the week, and the Lower Keys or Key West for the last nights. Where to stay by Key (Where to stay in the Florida Keys: best base by Key for a 5–7 night trip) breaks down each base and what it is close to.

Lock the scarce pieces first, in this order: Thanksgiving-week lodging if you are traveling then, Florida State Parks campsites the day your window opens, and Dry Tortugas ferry seats. Then add refundable or easy-to-move tours, and leave restaurant and beach choices flexible around the wind.

Save the primary stop and one backup per day in the trip planner, so a windy morning means a swap rather than a rethink. Re-check NHC and the NWS Key West marine forecast before each water day, and confirm hours, fees and access on each official page. Directory listings link to the operator or agency source when one is available.

Quick checklist
  • Book in this order: holiday lodging, state-park campsites, then Dry Tortugas seats.
  • Plan two or three bases rather than daily long drives.
  • Save a backup for every water day in Trip planner.

Frequently asked questions

Is hurricane season over in November?

Not until November 30. The National Hurricane Center states that Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and that tropical cyclone activity sometimes occurs outside those dates. November is on the back side of the season, but it is not storm-proof, so re-check NHC outlooks at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/ in the week before you travel and book with change terms you have read.

What is the weather like in the Florida Keys in November?

NWS Key West describes November as a transition month between the wet season and the dry season. Expect a mix of late showers and the first drier, breezier stretches behind cold fronts, which warm water tends to moderate. Pack a light layer for evenings and boat rides. Climate background: https://www.weather.gov/key/climate

Will wind affect snorkeling and boat trips in November?

It can. Breezy days behind fronts can roughen the reef and cloud shore snorkel spots, and operators may cancel. Read the NWS Key West marine forecast at https://www.weather.gov/key/ before each water day, schedule reef or Dry Tortugas trips early in the trip so they can be rebooked, and keep a land backup nearby.

Is Thanksgiving week busy in the Florida Keys?

Plan for it to be. Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26 in 2026. The holiday week brings more demand for lodging, campsites and parks, and Florida State Parks says Bahia Honda State Park may close when its day-use areas are full. Book early and compare full lodging totals for your exact nights. This guide does not quote prices.

How far ahead can I book Florida Keys state-park camping for November?

Florida State Parks says Florida residents may reserve campsites and cabins up to 11 months before arrival and non-Florida residents up to 10 months. New sites are released for reservation every day, and unreserved sites go to walk-ins first come, first served. Source: https://www.floridastateparks.org/reservation-information. See Florida Keys campgrounds & RV parks: public vs private, booking windows and rig limits for options by Key.

Do I need to book the Dry Tortugas ferry in advance for November?

Yes, if you can. NPS says Yankee Freedom reservations are limited and sell out months in advance, limits ferry campers to 10 per day, and recommends booking months ahead, especially around the winter holidays. The seaplane does not carry campers. Sources: https://www.nps.gov/drto/planyourvisit/camping.htm and https://www.nps.gov/drto/planyourvisit/directions.htm. Plan the day with Dry Tortugas day trip from Key West: ferry vs seaplane planner.

Are there events in Key West in November?

Race World Offshore lists the Key West World Championship powerboat races for November 1–8, 2026 at Truman Waterfront Park, and says there is no parking near the Navy Mole viewing entrance. Confirm the schedule on the organizer’s page at https://raceworldoffshore.com/key-west/. This guide only includes event dates confirmed on the organizer’s own page.

Where should I stay in the Keys in November?

Two or three bases usually work better than one. Upper Keys for reef and mangrove days, Marathon for land backups close together, and the Lower Keys or Key West for the end of the trip. See Where to stay in the Florida Keys: best base by Key for a 5–7 night trip and save your stops in Trip planner.
